CAMDEN GREEN LOOP

Camden’s Spatial Strategy

A place-shaping strategy which brings together public realm projects, destinations and green spaces that contribute to permeable, connected neighbourhoods of high quality environments.

The way our cities are designed must be updated to respond to the challenges of building post-covid neighbourhoods in a climate changing world. The Camden Green Loop is a concept that knits together various public realm initiatives and provides an overarching direction with guiding principles; inclusivity, sustainability and fair economy. We are priming Camden to become a leading example in public realm and urban design, where projects are led by community need, facilitate the thriving of innovative entrepreneurship and create a blueprint for the democratic cities of the future.

The Camden Green Loop connects Kings Cross, Euston and Camden Town with a growing network of physical interventions that enable the public realm to better serve local resident and business communities. It places green spaces, institutions, cultural experiences and business clusters within the context of one another, enhancing their value as both visitor destinations and local amenities. The emphasis is on its walkability – these destinations are all reachable with sustainable travel modes via green, creative routes.

Connectivity between destinations and communities is central to its objectives. By increasing permeability with improved cycling and walking routes we can begin to create ‘15 Minute City’ neighbourhoods, whilst enabling communities access to the economic and learning opportunities that come with the major developments in Kings Cross, Camden Town and Euston.

Flagship Projects

  • CAMDEN HIGHLINE

An independent charity working to transform disused railway in to a park in the sky, connecting Camden Town to Kings Cross. The feasibility has been confirmed, a design team appointed… The next stages are planning permission and fundraising. All underpinned by thorough public engagement and consultation.

  • DRUMMOND STREET

An effort to protect a business community that has helped shape the character of Euston, as it faces drastic changes. Public realm enhancements such as shop frontages, lighting, art and street furniture aim to transform the street’s reputation, entice new footfall and create a pedestrian-friendly neighbouhood.

  • CAMDEN COLLECTIVE

A charity making use of vacant buildings in Camden Town and Euston providing free work, retail and event space to local small businesses. Collective’s model has created a network of connected entrepreneurs whilst enlivening town centres with a buzzing young community who come to consider the area their home.

  • CAMDEN INSPIRE

An annual event celebrating local independent businesses of Camden Town and Euston. The model has evolved to make use of the public realm with temporary road closures, experimenting with how these civic spaces might be used for creative and commercial purposes if cars are no longer prioritised.
